The Children's Garden took on a far different look for the children this spring. The last two months consisted of a weekly remote learning routine of three teacher-led Zoom lessons, several Vimeo presentations and various skill development and art activities. Also included in the mixture were several Zoom birthday celebrations. Kindergarten graduation also was modified as the teachers visited the home of each graduate and presented them with their diploma and several gifts. Giving Thanks Feast and Food Drive-- a Children's Garden Thanksgiving tradition.
Our children host their parents, grandparents and friends to a Giving Thanks meal. In preparation, they prepare much of the food and the kindergartners announce selected songs and poems for the event that are sung by everyone. In addition, the children are invited to bring donated food to school for eleven families at the Angels of Grace Center in Wyandotte County. Parents are encouraged to have their children earn the food items through chores/jobs at home. Hopefully, the sense of giving will directly come from the child’s pride in accomplishing those tasks. ... See more

A Halloween Tradition
This past month our children and parents visited the Bickford Springs Assisted Living Center as part of an inter-generational outreach program. As you can see, the children came dressed in their Halloween costumes. The visit began with a parade and was followed by the children gathering together to sing songs and recite poems. Before departing, the children wished the residents a Happy Halloween. The day was a joyful experience for everyone! ... See more

Kansas City Ballet, Dance-a-Story Workshop
Last month a Kansas City ballet dancer/teacher presented the Nutcracker Story to our students. She brought many costumes to show such as the Nutcracker’s enormous head, the mouse costume and crown, the Sugar Plum’s fairy tutu and tiara, the Chinese umbrella and many more. The children were also invited to stand and dance with her the Chinese and Russian dance. The finale was allowing each child to execute a grand jete’ (leap) in the open area. Weston Red Barn Farm
Our students and parents along with grandparents, siblings and staff went on our annual Weston Red Barn Field Trip last month. It was another fun and educational farm experience for all who attended. The children learned so much about how farms work. The day included a hay ride, pumpkin picking, visiting the animal pens and concluded with an animal show. ... See more

Chinese New Year Celebration-- During the course of the school year the students celebrate various cultural holidays. This past week the kindergartners decorated boxes to be worn on their heads for their participation in a traditional dragon parade in front of the younger children. In the last photos, you see the kinders passing out tangerines, chop sticks, fortune cookies and red envelops containing a golden chocolate coin. These gifts are an expression of good luck and good health in the Chinese tradition. It was both an educational and fun day for the children. ... See more

There are three enrichment programs at The Children's Garden for our kindergarten class. In addition to Spanish and science, our kinders meet weekly with Ms. Ali for art class. One of their recent projects was to sketch a portrait of Maria Montessori. It is rewarding to observe the enjoyment our 5 and 6-year olds demonstrate as they develop their art skills. ... See more
